I'm just getting started in reloading and long range shooting and have decided to build a 6.5 rem mag and am looking for any tips. Its going to be used for deer, goats and a few yotes. I want something that will shoot in the 6-800 yard range. My budget is kinda limited so i was thinking of $1000-1200 range just for the gun and would like to build off a savage. Can someone point me in the right direction, what platform barrel, stock. Please keep in mind i would like to keep the gun light say 10lbs.
Any info would be great.

To build a "serious rifle" for LR Hunting it comes down to a multi-factorial build. As worthy as a 6.5 RM is, assuming perfect brass and etc, it is hard to beat.
Then enter the real world. One of the detail items is brass, the availability of 6.5 RM brass is limited to Remington and that is about it as far as I know.
If compared to the 6.5x284, you will quickly find that high quality brass, high quality reamers, and gunsmiths that a very experienced with it. They know what will make a 6.5x284 shoot well.
The Barrel and the smith is a very personal choice, there are a lot of guys out there, many are just as good as another, then there are few who are "so-so" good at adjusting triggers and doing basic repairs, but have no business bellying up to a lathe or a mill. If we wish to send me are pm with your phone number, we can talk on the phone.
Ballistically the 6.5 RM & the 6.5x284 are very close to each other.
The other advantage is that Savage is making a f-class rifle in 6.5x284. I have heard the bores are a little rough on some production rifles, but the vast majority of them are shooters.
If you are looking for a mountian rifle, that is 7.5 lbs or less, buy a Tikka T-3 Lite in 270 WSM. My Tikka T-3 Lite is lights out out to 600 yds, it is a 270 Win.
